Apple to iPod users: stay away from Vista

If you’re a PC user running iTunes software, Apple’s advice is to avoid upgrading to Vista for time being.

Apple: stay away from Vista
Apple has identified a number of compatibility issues that may affect the functionality of an iPod working with the current version of iTunes and Vista.
The problems may not affect all Vista users, but the issues are serious enough that Apple has recommended that PC users hold off installing the new operating system.
The key problem, and it’s a big one, is that you may not be able to play music and videos that you buy on iTunes. There’s also a chance that you might corrupt your iPod. Other problems include slow operation, issues with the calendar and address book synchronization.
Apple says it will release a new version of iTunes that addresses the problems in the next few weeks.
“Although iTunes 7.0.2 may work with Windows Vista on many typical PCs, Apple is aware of some known compatibility issues and recommends that iTunes customers wait to upgrade to Windows Vista until after the next release of iTunes, which will be available in the next few weeks,” the company said in a statement.
The consumer version of Vista was launched last week, while it’s been available to business users since November last year. Vista is now standard on new computers.
What I find interesting about this situation is that Apple wasn’t in a position to anticipate these problems and release a new version of iTunes well in advance of the release of Vista.
You’ve got a situation now where you go out and buy a new Vista-powered PC, and you go out and buy a new iPod, and there’s a good chance that the two won’t work with each other. And what about all those eager-beaver PC users who already have an iPod and have already upgraded to Vista.
You’d think that is a situation that BOTH Microsoft and Apple would prefer to avoid. It seems that the rivalry between the two companies stops them from working together, even when it’s in both their interests to do so…
