Microsoft stops automatic distribution of Vista SP1 update
By Arnold Zafra
Microsoft stopped the automatic distribution of the Vista SP1 update prerequisite KB937287 after receiving complaints from users who experienced problems during the update. The KB937287 servicing stack update is one of the prerequisites for the upcoming Vista SP1 upgrade which is due for official release by March.
Although the Vista SP1 update won’t be officially released until March, Microsoft released the update last week to highlight the urgency of updating the SP1 servicing stack to successfully install and remove Vista SP1 on currently installed versions of Windows Vista.
One of the complaints posted on the official Microsoft Vista blog said that the user needed to reformat his hard disk after the Vista SP1 update prerequisite corrupted his PC.
Nick White of the Vista blog was quick to respond by announcing that they had to stop the automatic updates until the problem with the KB93 is solved. He also advised those affected by the bug in the update to do a system restore in their PCs.
Interestingly, not all Vista users were hit by the problem. There were some who were able to successfully run the update in their PCs running the current Vista version. But nonetheless, the SP1 prerequisite update was already pulled out and so the best thing to do right now is to wait for further announcement from Microsoft.
