Apple to restrict third party applications for iPod/iPhone

By Arnold Zafra

apple-to-restrict-third-party-applications-for-ipod-iphone.jpgWhile the anticipation for the iPod and iPhone software development kit plans build up, rumour has it that Apple may be implementing some restrictions to the SDK.

Sources speaking to iLounge said that Apple will be approving or denying all software that will be developed for iPod and iPhone using its soon to be released SDK. Apple will act as the gatekeeper and will only release those which it deems worthy for release to the iTunes Store.

The plan had mixed reaction from iLounge’s sources. On one hand, it may work positively for larger companies since Apple will be forced to give priority to their releases. However, it may also result to delays in making third party applications available for use in iPods and iPhones.

In addition to controlling which third party applications will be released for public consumption Apply is also planning to prevent SDK developers from interfacing with Dock Connector-based accessories connected to iPod and iPhone. This will certainly hamper the development of new accessories for the iPod and iPhone. A move which may affect the creative aspect of the two Apple products.

The iPod/iPhone SDK is slated for release in June but Apple is planning to release an incomplete beta version of the SDK sometime this month. This plan would definitely affect those users who “jailbreak” their iPod/iPhones as Apple may prevent new applications on hacked iPhone and iPod Touch units.
