Bendable TV Anyone?
By Susan Wilson
A method for producing lightweight bendable screens was announced yesterday. GE has developed a cost effective process for producing OLEDs using roll to roll manufacturing. What are OLEDs and why should you care? Well, as the press release says:
"OLEDs are thin, organic materials sandwiched between two electrodes, which illuminate when an electrical charge is applied. They represent the next evolution in lighting products."
Beyond the simple lighting possibilities, OLEDs also offer a breakthrough in light weight energy efficient bendable screens. Imagine a 32" or 40" television that you can roll up and transport with you on vacation. You will have your own television to watch whatever you want to watch, when you want to watch it, at a decent size to watch it on. Whew! That’s a lot of watching.
Bendable OLEDs will also allow for larger screens for smaller electronics. How does that work you ask? Imagine a handheld device about the size of a Blackberry or iPhone with an ultra light screen that could be unfolded to the size of a decent screen. The MacBook Air could actually incorporate a DVD player by using an OLED screen and it would still be considered and ultra light. I won’t say that this is the next best thing since sliced bread or sliced cheese but it may make all of our lives a little brighter and easier to see at a much better price.
