Buzz Broadband shuts down WiMAX network, calls it a failure
By Arnold Zafra
One of the early adopters of WiMAX technology in Australia has officially closed down its network. Buzz Broadband, which started running the WiMAX project last year, has encountered various problems with its WiMAX network.
Buzz Broadband CEO Garth Freeman called the WiMAX network a disaster and said it failed miserably in delivering good services to customers. Freeman said that since implementing the WiMAX network, his company has experienced many technical problems.
Freeman even cited that WiMAX only covers up 2km instead of the publicized 50kms distance coverage. WiMAX technology also had trouble indoors at when more than 400 meters from the transmitters. But the worst part is that WiMAX technology has so much latency or delay in transmission which causes irregular services to Buzz Broadband’s customers.
Despite Buzz Broadband’s experience, there are still some internet providers who appreciated the WiMAX technology. One example is another Australian internet service provider, Intermode, which is very satisfied with the WiMAX since implementing the technology.
Buzz Broadband’s complaints about the WiMAX technology spread across the web and concerns are now rising since Sprint has just launch its very own Xohm WiMAX network. Will it suffer the same fate as Buzz Broadband’s network?

Buzz Broadband used 3.5GHz spectrum to offer a fixed WiMAX service which requires line-of-sight, in contrast to Sprint’s XOHM mobile WiMAX service which does not require LOS and penetrates buildings better. Airspan also offered a precise explanation about the circumstances of their installation.
