Australian retailers consider dropping the Xbox 360

By Arnold Zafra

xbox360 If the results of the recent survey of 10 Australian retail chains conducted by ChannelNews and SmartHouse is any indication of things to come in the Australian gaming market, Microsoft’s Xbox  may well be on its way to the dead pool.

The survey involved over 2,000 stores in Australia  that sell all three game consoles, the Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. Based on the results of the survey, the majority of the retail chains have attributed most of their sales  to both the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii. The retailers attributed the good sales of the Sony PS3 to the fact that they can also market it as a Blu-ray player and not just as a game consoles. While for Nintendo Wii, the growth of sales was attributed to the console’s appeal to women and kids, specifically because of its interactive capabilities.

The retailers also claimed that the Xbox 360 may have lost its novelty and purpose. No matter how Microsoft tries to rejuvenate the promotion of  its console,  it still lacks something new that it  can offer to consumers. A Melbourne retailer even said that the only reason they are stocking on the Xbox 360 is because of their relationship with Microsoft.

Maybe it’s time for Microsoft to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new way of reinventing its rapidly aging games console.
