Can the Playstation 3 regain its lead in the console gaming market?

By Arnold Zafra

Can the Playstation 3 regain its lead in the console gaming market The Sony Playstation 3 may be lagging far behind console market leader Nintendo Wii, and closely behind Microsoft’s Xbox 360, but it is well positioned to regain its lead. This was what Sony’s Console Division Head Kaz Hirai said during a BBC News interview.

Mr Hirai believes that the PS3 will have the install base that they were looking for within its 10-year lifecycle.

“I am very confident that after the 10-year lifecycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position,” he told the BBC.

Currently, the Playstation 3 is lagging behind Nintendo Wii which is the number one next-generation console worldwide, as well as the Xbox 360.

In terms of sales, the Nintendo Wii had sold more than 25 million units by April this year. The Xbox 360 had sold19 million units in the same period, while the PS3 had managed to ship only 10.5 million by the end of 2007.

Mr. Hirai was confident that the PS3’s line-up of games for release will boost up console sales. These games include potential bestsellers, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Motorstorm, Little Big Planet, among others slated for release between now and the end of the year.

In addition to this line-up of great games, Mr. Hirai also said that the PS3 has already managed to overcome the major challenges that it once faced during its launched.

If you recall, the Playstation 3 had to deal with inadequate supply of units and the lack of available game titles during its early days.

These problems have been fixed and game developers who once found it difficult to develop games for the PS3 due to the complexity of the platform have learned to embrace the PS3’s technology.
