Vista still highly vulnerable to security threats, says PC Tools study

Using its ThreatFire Anti-Virus Software, software maker PC Tools examined 1.5 million of its customers. When a threat occurred on any of the users’ machines, it was sent to PC Tools to determine whether it was a valid threat.

The result of the study showed that there were 639 threats per 1,000 machines running Vista. This is slightly lower than the ratio of security threats of Windows XP powered machines, which was 1,021 per 1,000 machines. What’s even more interesting is the fact that most of the security threats on Vista may have been caused by Vista’s features that are supposed to make the operating system more secure.

But PC Tools CEO Simon Clausen told IT News Australia that this doesn’t mean that Windows XP is a more secured OS than Vista. He stressed that Windows XP has a wider distribution base than the Vista, which is why XP has more security threats.
