Two times more 2008-09 RPG’s on XBox 360 than PS3

By Carl Borrowman

Two times more 2008-09 RPG's on XBox 360 than PS3The perception used to be that Playstation would always have a plethora of good role playing games to choose from, and the XBox 360 was only for shooters, not so any more. Utilizing IGN’s review lists and U. S. release date calendars (subject to change) along with GamerStats average review scores, it is evident that the 360 currently rules this category in not only total RPG’s but also quality RPG’s (GSS 8.0 or above).

PS3 RPG games (including action RPG’s and strategy RPG’s) slated for this year and next include:

  1. Valkyria Chronicles, Action RPG, Sega, Nov 08
  2. Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Action RPG, Square Enix, TBA 09
  3. Final Fantasy XIII, Action RPG (ARPG), Square Enix, TBA 09
  4. Free Realms, Persistent Online RPG (PORPG), SOE, Q3 08*
  5. DC Universe, PORPG, Broadband Only, SOE Austin, TBA 09*

  7. Disgaea 3, Strategy RPG (SRPG), NIS, TBA 09

  1. Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, GSS 6.3

XBox 360 RPG games slated for this year and next:

  2. Fable 2, ARPG, Lionhead Studios, Oct 08
  3. Dungeon Hero, ARPG, Firefly Studios, Q1 09*
  4. Tales of Vesperia, RPG, Namco Bandai, rumored PS3, unconfirmed, Aug 08
  5. Infinite Undiscovery, RPG, tri-Ace, Sep 08

XBox 360 RPG’s already released:

  1. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Elements, GSS 5.9*
  2. Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, GSS 6.3
  3. Lost Odyssey, GSS 8.4
  4. Mass Effect, GSS 9.1*, Mass Effect 2 and 3 confirmed as titles in the works, not announced for any specific gaming machine.
  5. Eternal Sonata, GSS 7.9, not on release calendar, but listed as TBA for PS3
  6. Blue Dragon, GSS 7.8, Blue Dragon 2 in early stages of planning

RPG’s available or scheduled to be available on both XBox 360 and PS3:

  1. Rise of the Argonauts*
  2. Elveon*
  3. Alpha Protocol*
  4. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2*, also scheduled on Wii, PS2, DS
  5. Borderlands*

  11. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance*, also on Xbox, PSP, Wii, GBA, PS2
  12. Enchanted Arms
  13. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion*
  14. Arcania: A Gothic Tale*
  15. The Last Remnant, RPG, Square Enix, TBA
  16. Phantasy Star Universe, GSS 7.3*, also available on PS2

*title also available on PC

Notes:

1. Release dates and exclusivity are subject to change

2. XBLA and PSN titles not included

Well, there you have it, 8 RPG’s available or scheduled for the PS3, and 16 for the 360. While the 360 may have more total titles, even more total quality titles, does it really matter? Considering the big names (Final Fantasy, Valkyria, Disgaea) and fan base the Playstation 3 has, let alone multi-platform releases, could any one gamer get through all the good titles? Besides this, RPG’s are notorious for their development cycle, so the 360’s head start in the market is a big factor.

Also notice the increase in PS3 RPG’s scheduled for release, and it seems to be catching up to the 360. Five of the 360 titles are also scheduled for release on PC, while only 2 PS3 titles are scheduled for PC. In addition, it seems there are only 2 traditional RPG’s for PS3, while the 360 has seven. Time will tell if this makes a difference in sales, but in the meantime, it seems to be just one more feather in the 360 cap.

      Frankly, I don’t give a sh1t.

PS3 is still the better console AND it’s a Blueray player so 360 can kiss my a$$.

      Chuppa me WABO!!!

    3. XBOX 4 EVER:

PS3 sucks reason being that games on the PS3 always come out last why do u ask because the graphics systam game engine and the matrix inside are too complex to work with u are just a fan boy every games designer map and graphics designers prefurr the 360 because its flexble to them for working with it. period enough said and, and PS3 throphies are dumb blatent rip off MICROSOFTS ORIGNIAL IDEA achivements got that good so keep quite and yeah PSN is free but u know why cus its shit and sony cant be bothered to up date it

    4. Andrew:

Ok i own both the 360 and the ps3 and i personally like the ps3 more caz the graphocs are better and for the fact that we all know that soon down the line all games are going to do wat mgs4 had to do (delete stuff to fit on one blue-ray disk) or go ahead and use multiple disks. Now lost odyesay is an awesome game but the fact is it would have fit on one blue-ray disk. Wat its going to come down to is that when publishers are making games they wont want to pay for like 8 dvds when they could spend half the money and put it on 1 or 2 blue-ray. And plus a lot of companys have said that they are making the ps3 their lead platform. But i do like my 360 so im content with the fact that i’m getting both types of games i like but i do forsee the ps3 making a come back within the next year or two.

Andrew is right. The main problem came when the PS3 was released after the Xbox 360. So of course the Xbox 360 is more popular. It was the first Next-Gen Console. It’s a phase, that’s all. Just like the Wii. Oblivion IV sucked. Disgaea 3 is more fun.

I just wonder if Bandai will release a .hack mmorpg. Still, you forgot the psp. A lot of rpgs go that route. I personally don’t like 5 disc. It’s annoying. Especially when you need to go back to disc one bcause you want to find some item.

Oh guys, if movies can go to blu-ray, games should go that way two. It’s sad that game dvelopers are lagging behind movies because they’re to stupid to work with the PS3. Sony just needs to release the rpgs in Japan. This isn’t an rpg, but Drake’s Fourtune used only a portion of the PS3’s power.

      Go 360 of Death.
