Two times more 2008-09 RPG’s on XBox 360 than PS3

By Carl Borrowman

Two times more 2008-09 RPG's on XBox 360 than PS3The perception used to be that Playstation would always have a plethora of good role playing games to choose from, and the XBox 360 was only for shooters, not so any more. Utilizing IGN’s review lists and U. S. release date calendars (subject to change) along with GamerStats average review scores, it is evident that the 360 currently rules this category in not only total RPG’s but also quality RPG’s (GSS 8.0 or above).

PS3 RPG games (including action RPG’s and strategy RPG’s) slated for this year and next include:

  1. Valkyria Chronicles, Action RPG, Sega, Nov 08
  2. Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Action RPG, Square Enix, TBA 09
  3. Final Fantasy XIII, Action RPG (ARPG), Square Enix, TBA 09
  4. Free Realms, Persistent Online RPG (PORPG), SOE, Q3 08*
  5. DC Universe, PORPG, Broadband Only, SOE Austin, TBA 09*

  1. Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, GSS 6.3

XBox 360 RPG games slated for this year and next:

  10. Spectral Force 3, RPG, Idea Factory, Jul 08

XBox 360 RPG’s already released:

  1. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Elements, GSS 5.9*
  2. Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, GSS 6.3
  3. Lost Odyssey, GSS 8.4
  4. Mass Effect, GSS 9.1*, Mass Effect 2 and 3 confirmed as titles in the works, not announced for any specific gaming machine.
  5. Eternal Sonata, GSS 7.9, not on release calendar, but listed as TBA for PS3
  6. Blue Dragon, GSS 7.8, Blue Dragon 2 in early stages of planning

RPG’s available or scheduled to be available on both XBox 360 and PS3:

  1. Rise of the Argonauts*
  2. Elveon*
  3. Alpha Protocol*
  4. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2*, also scheduled on Wii, PS2, DS
  5. Borderlands*
  6. Two Worlds*
  7. Fallout 3*
  8. X Quest
  9. Alien RPG Project (untitled), also scheduled on Wii
  10. Big Huge Games RPG (untitled)*, also scheduled on Wii
  11. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance*, also on Xbox, PSP, Wii, GBA, PS2
  12. Enchanted Arms
  13. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion*
  14. Arcania: A Gothic Tale*
  15. The Last Remnant, RPG, Square Enix, TBA
  16. Phantasy Star Universe, GSS 7.3*, also available on PS2

*title also available on PC

Notes:

1. Release dates and exclusivity are subject to change

2. XBLA and PSN titles not included

Well, there you have it, 8 RPG’s available or scheduled for the PS3, and 16 for the 360. While the 360 may have more total titles, even more total quality titles, does it really matter? Considering the big names (Final Fantasy, Valkyria, Disgaea) and fan base the Playstation 3 has, let alone multi-platform releases, could any one gamer get through all the good titles? Besides this, RPG’s are notorious for their development cycle, so the 360’s head start in the market is a big factor.

Also notice the increase in PS3 RPG’s scheduled for release, and it seems to be catching up to the 360. Five of the 360 titles are also scheduled for release on PC, while only 2 PS3 titles are scheduled for PC. In addition, it seems there are only 2 traditional RPG’s for PS3, while the 360 has seven. Time will tell if this makes a difference in sales, but in the meantime, it seems to be just one more feather in the 360 cap.

      Frankly, I don’t give a sh1t.

PS3 is still the better console AND it’s a Blueray player so 360 can kiss my a$$.

    2. trav:

      Chuppa me WABO!!!

    3. XBOX 4 EVER:

PS3 sucks reason being that games on the PS3 always come out last why do u ask because the graphics systam game engine and the matrix inside are too complex to work with u are just a fan boy every games designer map and graphics designers prefurr the 360 because its flexble to them for working with it. period enough said and, and PS3 throphies are dumb blatent rip off MICROSOFTS ORIGNIAL IDEA achivements got that good so keep quite and yeah PSN is free but u know why cus its shit and sony cant be bothered to up date it

    4. Andrew:

Ok i own both the 360 and the ps3 and i personally like the ps3 more caz the graphocs are better and for the fact that we all know that soon down the line all games are going to do wat mgs4 had to do (delete stuff to fit on one blue-ray disk) or go ahead and use multiple disks. Now lost odyesay is an awesome game but the fact is it would have fit on one blue-ray disk. Wat its going to come down to is that when publishers are making games they wont want to pay for like 8 dvds when they could spend half the money and put it on 1 or 2 blue-ray. And plus a lot of companys have said that they are making the ps3 their lead platform. But i do like my 360 so im content with the fact that i’m getting both types of games i like but i do forsee the ps3 making a come back within the next year or two.

    5. Warangel:

Andrew is right. The main problem came when the PS3 was released after the Xbox 360. So of course the Xbox 360 is more popular. It was the first Next-Gen Console. It’s a phase, that’s all. Just like the Wii. Oblivion IV sucked. Disgaea 3 is more fun.

I just wonder if Bandai will release a .hack mmorpg. Still, you forgot the psp. A lot of rpgs go that route. I personally don’t like 5 disc. It’s annoying. Especially when you need to go back to disc one bcause you want to find some item.

Oh guys, if movies can go to blu-ray, games should go that way two. It’s sad that game dvelopers are lagging behind movies because they’re to stupid to work with the PS3. Sony just needs to release the rpgs in Japan. This isn’t an rpg, but Drake’s Fourtune used only a portion of the PS3’s power.

      Go 360 of Death.

    6. Wesley:

You need to move Final Fantasy 13 from the PS3 only list to the both list. It will be released on both consoles and is no longer a PS3 exclusive. http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/888/888967p1.html

    7. DeusExMachina:

Well yeah you could move FFXIII to the both list, but you see that wouldnt be entirely accurate. As FFXIII for PS3 is actually a game. FFXIII for X360 is more like a curse, I mean 6 discs or 1 blu-ray? Dumbed down version or the proper way its meant to be played version, no DLC or DLC until it comes out ure ass, Port or the original game? I dont know th PS3 version’s the only one that sounds like a game.

    8. DeusExMachina:

You forgot Folklore, Cross Edge, Eternal Sonata (PS3), Shin Megami Tensei and Star Ocean 4. Douche BAG!

    9. Jason:

Ok well honestly, the data that is stored on XboX360 disks is 40gb, and a BluRay disk holds 60gb… Lost odessy would have been on 3 disks instead of 4, woo hoo… also i really am not that lazy to have to get up and put in another disk, if it means that my gameplay, story, graphics, overall quality of the game is that much better. I want to play it for 60+ hours, not just 6 hours… On that note too, it doesnt cost them but like 6cents a disk… its the custom cases that cost more than the 4 disks combined cost… even that isnt enought to force the price past normal costs. the costs are in development, production practically pays for itself these days. I could go on and on as to why developers want to go with XboX over Sony, mainly, its easier SDK to develope with. Cell Processor is a whole knew piece of technology, and their SDK costs 5x more than the Xbox’s one. Most you people really dont know what your talking about, and yet you have some much to say about things. I work in the Game Dev industry, so take my word for it, Wii is not a phase, its a friggen lifestyle, They have been sold out for 2 years now… in the game industry, thats not a phase. the most money you can make is selling Wii games, but thier games suck for single player games so most Devs dont mess with it, thier just party games, kid games, and old people who cant press more than 4 button games. 360 shipped with 2x the Graphics RAM, and yes even though PS3 has more proccessing power, unless your hardware rendering your graphics, the processor plays little part in the end result of overall graphics, they compliment the GPU, its not ALL cpu…. And another thing, if you guys think that the PS3 has such better graphics, then tell me why is it that 9 out of 10 games cant even render at 1080i/p thats rediculous… if your xbox doesnt look good, try going to the settings and turn the output as high as your screen will allow(assuming your even using an HDTV) I use my PS3 for BRD only, LOL i got it because i thought it would have a ton of RPGs like they always have, but they didnt, and i just recently got the 360 about 4 months ago, and as far as gameplay is concerned its way better. (ps i dont work for Microsoft, sony, or nintendo, although i used to beta games for nintendo, and i do live in Redmond, i work on an open source MMORPG for PC.)

    10. pcphantom:

Every time I read these posts I swear they get lamer and less accurate. First thing first, if you go to a game store and actually try to BUY a RPG rather than go on ever changing release schedules you will see that 360 has WAY more titles and of the ones they have WAY more good ones. In addition, they have far more pending than what is listed and not all the games listed as PS3 exclusives are, some mentioned afterwards like someone mentioned “Star Ocean 4″ lol… that’s actually listed to be a 360 Exclusive and Folklore isn’t even a real RPG. I have both systems, though I bought my PS3 first because I am a HUGE RPG/Strategy fan and I thought it would have more like the PS2 did, I was proven wrong. Fanboys can hold onto their stories and forums of trash talking to swear a come back is going to happen but lets face reality. MS won the RPG market. Sony’s biggest RPG makers don’t even like them anymore, Square publically announced they preferred programming for Nintendo over PS3 and over 70% of their upcoming games are DS exclusives. RPG’s are GREAT and are console sellers to many of us, but lets face reality, they don’t make the $$ big name shooters do and when it costs TONS to make the game, you need enough of a market to get that back. There are a great deal of PS3 owners out there that simply bought it as a cheap blue-ray player and their attachment rate sucks. Look at the NPD top 10 Every month, look at who’s games stay on there for months and who’s come on for a month then vanish… or better yet, how many PS3 titles have even seen the #1 spot, ever?

You can say whatever you want to fool yourselves, but if you love RPG’s and strategy games and are unwilling to own a 360, you let your stubborn fanboy pride short you on some really great games this generation.

Also, FYI on this whole Blue-ray vs. DVD thing.

No one uses dual layer Blue-ray disks for games as they cost more than 10 single layer disks (Ever try to buy one, it’s more than the cost of a new movie for 1 disk). So blue-ray’s hold 25gigs. DVD9 disks are fairly cheap now, but most still use DVD5 disks (4.7gb) though it still is less for 3 DVD9 (9.4gb) disks than it is for 1 blue-ray (25gb) disk as far as a publisher is concerned.

Next, since blue=ray is sooooo SLOW, the only thing you can get out of the disk is extended video cut scenes (lol, like we really want more of those!). If you actually had a game that took 25gb on graphics you’d probably have to install at least 20gb+ of it to your PS3’s hard drive. Since most of the units sold are 40gb models and your average person won’t ever upgrade their hard drive, how many games you think they will ever make that install that much worse than PC games? After all, your average GOOD game right now installs 4-6gb already. Blue-ray bottle necks the PS3 big time as it actually reads data about 1/2 the speed of the DVD drive in the 360 and even the Wii (which is sad).

Though Jason doesn’t really know what he is talking about as far as disk storage, he’s correct as far as most of the graphics are a direct result of the GPU, not the CPU which is far less important on a game console than the GPU is. Factually speaking, ask any developer that doesn’t work for Sony (and even some of them lol), the 360 has a far more advanced graphics engine and is easier to program for. The CELL processor does have enough power to help the GPU, but only in games that it is exclusively programmed for and done so with great detail (MSG4 being the only game to date that even close to does this). Most of these articles I see are always written by PS3 fanboys which is annoying because they are always soo inaccurate. My only conclusion to this is because they have far too much time on their hands watching for release dates while 360 owners are too busy actually playing games. I got my PS3 January 07′ and my 360 March 08′, so far my 360 game selection outnumbers my PS3 selection over 3 to 1 in less than half the time owned. Fanboys can watch and wait all they want, I am off to play one of the 5 RPG’s I bought in the past couple months, I’ll buy the PS3 exclusives if and when they come out.

Oh yeah, and trying to claim Untold Legends as an RPG is funny at best, might as well start claiming gauntlet as one too!

    11. pcphantom:

Oh yeah, and Disgaea 3 is a PS2 game they ported to the PS3, but it’s the SAME GAME, and FF13 is a dual launch multi-plat in North America… Catch up a little please!

    12. DarkWater:

pcphantom….you took the words right out of my month…+1

    13. james:

ps3 rules xbox sucks if you want to believe what microsoft tells go right ahead but don’t come crying to sony when you have to fork out another 6000$ bucks on a xbox system in 3 years there shit there graphics suck compared to ps3 and most ps3 games arn’t running 1080 because we have to put up with cross platform crap people making games for 360 as well not just ps3 get yam facts right
